Merrow Ltd — AquaSense Product Launch
Merrow Ltd is a mid-sized British manufacturer of home and building-management products, founded in 1978 and based in Leeds, with roughly 340 employees and £62m in annual revenue. It built its reputation on domestic plumbing fittings and water-metering hardware sold through trade merchants and, more recently, direct to housing developers and facilities management firms. The business is privately held, majority-owned by the founding family, with a Board that includes two external non-executive directors brought in five years ago to professionalise governance ahead of a possible future sale or IPO.
Merrow has historically competed on manufacturing reliability and trade relationships rather than innovation — its product range has changed little in a decade, and its last genuinely new product launched seven years ago. Margins on the core plumbing-fittings business have been eroding under pressure from lower-cost imports, and the Board has been explicit that it wants at least one new, higher-margin product line to reduce that dependency. AquaSense — a connected leak-detection sensor for residential and light-commercial water systems — is the R&D department's answer: Merrow's first foray into IoT-enabled hardware, developed in-house over the past 18 months against a backdrop of internal skepticism about whether a traditional manufacturer can execute a software-adjacent product well. How this launch goes will shape whether Merrow invests further in this kind of product, or retreats to what it already knows.
